      By Christopher Kell (New York)
Installation and use of the Sirius satellite radio home kit for the Sportster model is easy and hardly needs the manual. All one needs do is attach the RCA audio plugs to an unused input in your audio system (I used the tape deck input), place the antenna near a window, and plug in the power. The Sirius radio gets the programming and your audio system provides the sound.

"First product did not work" 2009-01-11
By Andrew J. Hooverson (Fort Collins, CO)
This product was purchased as a X-mas gift for my parents. When they tried to get it up and running, the XM radio would not turn on. Thinking that it was the stereo itself, we replaced that. We soon found out that it was the home adapter kit that was not working. When I contacted the company about an exchange they were not helpful at all. I was told that I needed to ship it back to them, which ended up costing me more than the actual product ($10.00). When I called the Satelight Radio store, they were rude and could not offer any other options. They told me that there was NOTHING that could be done for me regarding the malfunctioning product or the shipping costs. I sent it back a week ago and am still waiting for the new product to arrive.

      • Requires XM NavTraffic, WX Weather, or satellite radio subscription for use
      • Compatible with select GPSMap, StreetPilot, and zumo GPS receivers
      • Measures roughly 3 inches in diameter; weighs 0.55 pounds; 1-year warranty

      Product Description

GXM 30 XM smart antenna delivers XM Satellite Radio, NavTraffic and Weather services to your compatible Garmin. Roughly 3 inches in diameter, the GXM 30 processes all XM information and sends the finished data to your unit for display. The GXM 30 requires a XM Satellite subscription(s). Traffic services are available only in select cities where XM Nav Traffic coverage exists.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The compact, all-in-one GXM 30 delivers XM satellite weather, traffic, and radio to your compatible Garmin GPS navigator. With the GXM 30 and a subscription to one of XM's satellite services, you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, or listen to commercial-free radio while driving with your navigator in tow. Setting up the GXM 30 is quick and easy: simply position the antenna where it has a clear view of the sky and connect it directly to the USB port on your GPS receiver. Once you've chosen the XM subscription that best fits your needs, you'll start receiving XM satellite services immediately.

The type of information you receive depends on your subscription package. XM NavTraffic notifies you of accidents, road construction, and weather-related traffic delays before you encounter them, and then offers an alternate route on your GPS. XM WX Weather, meanwhile, brings real-time animated weather data directly to your screen, letting you steer clear of bad weather or choose a less snowy mountain pass, for instance. Finally, XM satellite radio offers dozens of commercial-free music, talk, sports, and news stations--one for virtually every genre in existence. The GXM 30, which measures roughly 3 inches in diameter, fits the following Garmin navigators: the GPSMap 376C, GPSMap 378, GPSMap 478, GVN 52, StreetPilot 2820, StreetPilot 7200, StreetPilot 7500, StreetPilot 2730, and zumo 550. It's also backed by a one-year warranty.

      What's in the Box
      GXM30 satellite antenna, user's manual.

"A bottom-rung $49.00 XM radio works better than this" 2009-12-22
      By CindyS (MI)
My husband (an over-the-road truck driver) used this XM antenna on a StreetPilot7200, and it lost signal *constantly*. Also, if your StreetPilot7200 fails like ours did (along with 2 replacement rebuilt units) and you have no intention of ever buying another Garmin product, then you are stuck with a basically worthless XM antenna and out a lot of money. Begrudingly, at the end of the string of failed StreetPilot7200s, we bought a cheapo $49.00 XM radio from Walmart, and it has worked fine for several months now and does not lose signal like the GXM30.

       "GXM 30A Antenna" 2009-11-19
      By Katherine Hendricks
I use the GXM 30A antenna connected to my Garmin 396 to gather in flight weather. Having weather is great, however, this antenna has let me down 50% of the time. The USB cord is designed to fail. It's so fragile that under normal use you can only hope to see it last for a year or two. The cost to replace the entire antenna is $500. Garmin wants $110 to repair the cord. Just build a durable product in the first place and charge me once for it. I'm of sick and tired of being nickel and dimed to death by Garmin to replace cords and antennas on every unit...every year!

"I've had this for a few years..." 2009-10-31
By B. S. Bishop (Atlanta, GA USA)
I originally got this when I had a StreetPilot 2820. I tried the FM Traffic but it didn't seem to be giving me very accurate information at the time (the FM Service seems to have improved since then). Anyway the bottom line for this unit:

      - it's about the size and shape of a hockey puck

      - it is a specialized XM Radio. That is why it's so expensive (even then it still seems a bit expensive to me). If you get it and subscribe to XM you can plug this unit into any Garmin GPS and it will continue functioning.

      - the cable that is attached to it is 2 meters, I believe. Kind of short for most people. You can put two of the Garmin extension cables ($15 on Amazon) between your GPS and the XM Radio so that you can place it just about anywhere on your car. It's limited by the specs of USB cable length.

      - you can subscribe to just Traffic (~[...]/month I think), XM + traffic (which I think will run you [...] (XM) + [...](traffic) + [...] (the music royality fee introduced over the summer-2009) = [...]/month, or XM + traffic + weather (weather adds an additional [...] to the traffic but will get you weather radar + other features/maps if your GPS supports it)

      - traffic service comes with basic weather which is current conditions and forecast for major cities in the U.S. If your GPS doesn't support the additional weather maps then definitely only subscribe to the traffic service.

      - You can get a lifetime subscription which will cover the XM radio portion. Although tough to find on their site (which seems stupid) I believe it's $399 for XM Everything and $499 for XM Everything + Best of Sirius (some of the missing channels from Sirius - at that point you basically have most of what XM Sirius has to offer in terms of programming).

      - If you get a lifetime subscription it is for the life of the radio (not you) although you can transfer it up to 3 times for a fee of [...] each time.

      - Lifetime subscription does not include traffic or weather. Those will still cost you [...] and [...], respectively, each month.

      - The lifetime subscription will end up paying for itself in about 2.5 years.

Reception: for the best reception put the radio (puck) on top of your car (roof better) with about a 6-inch radius of metal (your roof or trunk) around it. I actually have mine mounted under the plastic of my dash and it works well with a trade-off that it has more drop-outs than when it was mounted to the roof. If you're driving in the mountains, regardless of whether it's Sirius or XM, you're going to have occassional dropouts. The mountains themselves will get in the way. Like another reviewer I've driven up into the Great Smoky Mountains and I too have frequent dropouts, even with the antennas on top of the car. Generally speaking, except for those conditions it works quite well.

Traffic: The traffic services are great. Really helpful with metro areas. Some areas are better than others but it depends on how the local DOT collects data. In Atlanta the system is very broad and helpful. You can see both incidents (accidents, stalled vehicles, etc.) and traffic flow. In some metro areas you don't get the flow but just the accidents that are reported. Don't fool yourself into thinking that every time an accident happens that it'll immediately popup on the screen. There's still processing time from the accident happening to someone calling it in to it being reported/noticed by the DOT to the data being distributed to the networks. Also, it's certainly possible that an accident could have been cleared and you're right at the spot where it's still being reported.

I recommend, if you know the area, that you have 'Avoid Traffic' turned off on your GPS. The problem is that it will avoid all traffic it knows about which is generally the freeways. So, for example, a freeway may have slowed to 45MPH in a section which may be OK for you getting home but if you have 'Avoid Traffic' turned on then it will route you around that and probably make your trip longer. I find it best to have that feature off and tell the GPS where I'm going every time I get into the car (unless it's literally down the street to the grocery store). The idea is that, yes, you know the way, but if a traffic incident pops up on your route it'll then give you a traffic warning icon/button which you can push and then review what's going on and make the call to have it route you around it or just push on through it (meaning, yeah, something is ahead but it really isn't that big of a deal).

Weather: As I mentioned above, basic weather comes with traffic. You'll get your current conditions and forecasts. If you want extras like maps (radar, road conditions, sky conditions, watches/warnings, etc.) then you first need to make sure you GPS has the ability to display it (not all do) and secondly need to tell the XM rep (you can't subscribe to traffic/weather via the website), that you specifically want the extra weather services.

Stock information is also sent to your GPS via this XM unit. It's included with the traffic service - actually, it may be included with the standard XM radio service. Not sure why the average person needs to know the price of a stock while they're driving but it's there.

If all you really care about is having your GPS have traffic info you're probably better off getting one of the FM Receivers and then subscribing to that for $60/lifetime of the receiver unit (the receiver is in the cable, and that is where your subscription lies). I think that all Garmin GPSs (and Kenwood units with Garmin GPS built-in) that accept the XM Radio module also accept the FM Traffic module. The reverse is not true. Consult your manual to be sure.

It seems as though Garmin is paring down the units that support this XM radio. It used to be the StreetPilot 7200/7500/2730/2820 but they've all been discontinued. There are some Kenwood head units and external GPS modules that support it but the newer Kenwood head units don't. I think they're mainly concentrating on FM Traffic and MSN Direct now.

If you're thinking about getting this and are the type of person to hold onto your gadgets for a long time (like 3+ years) then it's worth getting and paying the lifetime subscription fee. It's a lot of cash up front but it'll keep your monthly bill to [...] and you can just enjoy the XM without thinking about the [...]/month going out the window. If it doesn't work out you can always get a different XM Radio and transfer the subscription.

If you think it's likely that you'd upgrade your GPS in a year or two then I'd say go with the FM traffic receiver or MSN Direct receiver (which also has a lifetime subscription option - I think it's $99).

If you have a GPS with the ability to have traffic displayed and you either live in or frequently go through high traffic areas (check the coverage maps at [...]- follow the links; the maps are different for each service) then I highly recommend getting some kind of traffic data into your GPS.

       "Poor reception" 2009-10-20
By James L. Carlson (Atlanta, GA USA)
I purchased this receiver in anticipation of a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway just last week. I knew it would be remote and was looking forward to music and radio (NPR) while riding. The setup with XM took some time. I didn't realize the unit had to be on and outside, not in my garage when the "activation signal" was sent from XM. Nonetheless, once set, the unit was easy to connect to my Garmin Zumo 550. Once on the road however the reception was poor. While riding along the Parkway, any trees would block the signal giving a patchy reception that was so aggravating I turned off the unit. This continued all the way from my home in Georgia, along the Parkway and Skyline Drive into Washington DC. I really can't recommend this unit due to it's poor signal. I tried contacting XM... Surprise, I found "customer no-service". Good luck if you choose to buy this.

       "Great, but pricey, device" 2009-09-07
By MW (Miramar, Florida United States)
I bought this to go with my Garmin 7200 and have used it about a week. I got it mainly for XM reception, but also for the XM traffic and weather updates. I am still checking out the usefulness of the traffic updates, but so far the XM reception has been great. I don't even have to put it on the dashboard. I keep it on the console by the shift in my Armada and still get all three bars showing full, meaning at maximum, reception. I am pleased about this because it tended to get quite warm sitting on the dash in the sun, and over time heat kills electronics, plus I don't have to have it in plain sight for thieves to notice and I don't have to have wires streaming all over the place.

Keep in mind that one reason for the steep price is due to the fact that the actual XM radio is within this circular unit....it's not just an antenna. The Garmin GPS is merely an interface for the XM receiver that is built into the GXM30 Antenna.

Also keep in mind that it does not work as an antenna for GPS reception, only for the reception of XM radio. So if you are having trouble in that area, this is not going to remedy it. You will need to purchase yet another antenna for the GPS satellite reception side of things.

Lastly, on another note, if you already have an XM radio built into your car radio, but want the XM weather/traffic updates to be pumped through your Garmin GPS, you will have to activate this as a separate radio and pay the additional fee for both an additional XM radio and the XM weather/traffic updates. You might want to give some serious thought as to whether or not you really want that feature that badly.

It does seem to be high quality, but nevertheless I plan to keep it inside my car, which should help it last longer. I do believe, though, that despite what it does it is, in fact, over-priced, so minus one star.

       "Aesthetically pleasing clock" 2009-12-10
By A. J. Klein (Indiana, USA)
I purchased this clock for a soft, muted way of telling time in the wee hours of the morning. Brightness was a big factor for me. I can't sleep with a bright clock. One of the great things about this one is that the brightness is adjustable: high, low, or completely turned off. Low is PERFECT for a light sensitive sleeper like me. Others would probably get along just fine with the high setting. I should note that this clock was not placed directly beside my bed. Instead, it is about 6 feet away, and I can read it flawlessly without eyestrain--daytime or night.

I couldn't find any information on what exactly the nature sounds are, which was disappointing. Even more disappointing were the actual sounds themselves. The first one is supposed to sound like a babbling brook; the second is a meadow with birds; and the third is a kind of waterfall sounding noise. The "babbling brook" sounds more like someone blowing bubbles in a water glass. It's very annoying, so for those who like annoying alarms, perhaps this one's for you. The meadow birds are actually not bad at all--kind of soothing. The waterfall just plain hurts my ears. I blame this on the inability to turn the nature sounds down--you cannot adjust the volume of these at all.

Radio reception is acceptable. It comes with a wire antenna, which is adequately long. It's also coated white to hide on white walls easily. The tuner is the ridged wheel style. Mine might be a little funky. One of my favorite local radio stations is 98.9 FM. It won't come in on this clock radio unless it's set at 98.8. Not a huge deal; just something to consider. The solo speaker is as to be expected. I was neither disappointed nor impressed with it. No presets or anything fancy for the radio; just AM and FM functions. I wanted to use the alarm function without any sound playing (which I will get to in a second). The radio alarm option was perfect for this. I turned the alarm on radio and just turned the volume all the way down (the radio is the only alarm function that can be volume controlled).

Why would I want the alarm function without the actual alarm? The pretty lights! One of the major selling points for me on this clock radio was the rainbow and sunrise simulated lights. The pictures do not do them justice. For the rainbow setting (which can be turned on at whim via a switch--it's not just for the alarm), it will turn on when it's time for the alarm to go off. It rotates through myriad colors (red, blue, green, orange, purple, yellow) beautifully. For the sunrise setting, approximately 30 minutes before the alarm is to go off, the dome lights up with a deep red. As alarm time draws closer, the dome changes to a lighter red, an orange, an orange yellow, and then a brighter yellow, simulating a sunrise. THIS is the effect I wanted to use without the sound of an alarm. I can look at my clock across the room and see that if a color is present, it's time to get up soon, and depending on what color is displayed, I can guess how much longer I can doze. This eases me awake, as opposed to a jarring, blaring alarm.

First-time users might have to glance through the (short) user manual before utilizing all the features. I couldn't figure out how to test the nature sounds (you have to go through the alarm and have the alarm switch on the nature sound option). User manual is easy to read, gets to the point, and covers all the bases without being annoying. Once you've browsed this guide, the clock radio is pretty intuitive.

My only complaint (other than the two disappointing nature sounds) is that my device's battery back-up function does not work. I'm guessing that it was returned once already, as there was no protective cover on the clock display, and one of the stickers was placed awkwardly on the bag packaging. There's something loose inside the clock--something pretty small--and I am guessing this is why the battery back-up does not work. Because I did not buy this clock as my main alarm and we don't have power outages often, I'm overlooking this issue and keeping the clock. If it weren't for these two items of disappointment, this item would have received 5 stars.

"There Has To Be Something Better " 2007-01-03
        By Daniel R. Hagenow
I purchased a new vehicle that didn't have a cassette player so I needed something else in which to use my XM Radio. This product is a real disappointment compared to the cassette adapter. Stations continuously fade in-and-out and if you travel long distances you often need to change the radio frequency.

This item is not needed for the SkyFi2 system. That tuner has a built in modulator.

         "Worth the money!" 2005-08-05
        By J. adkins (Aiea, HI)
I saw mixed reviews concerning wireless modulators, but maybe the unsatisfied customers had bought inferior products. My Delphi adapter has worked well. I wanted to try out the satellite radio system before getting anything permanently installed in my vehicle and this has really helped. It is just a bit bothersome to have to adjust the channel selector while on long trips (as vacant frequencies come and go) but that is a small hassle when compared to the convenience of being able to install my system in any car without having to rewire everything. I highly recommend this product.

"I've waited over a year for this!" 2004-07-21
By GD from ND (ISN, ND United States)
We got our Delphi Sky-Fi unit over a year ago and intended to use it primarily in the car. Fortunately the car had come equipped with AM-FM radio with a CD & cassette player so we were able to use the Delphi radio + cassette adapter to recieve XM radio without having to buy an all new combo radio.

The cassette adapter got the XM signal to the radio, kind of, but it was too bassy and voices weren't as clear as we would have liked. But the big problem was that some XM stations, like FOX, make a lot of swooshing and whooshing between segments that are WAY LOUDER than the normal broadcast and their "radio only" commercials are much louder than the normal broadcast and you'd have to be messing with the volumn control all the time.

This little "Roadie" FM modulator is a great solution to the problems we had. With the XM signals going into the car radio now as an FM radio signal the radio's auto volumn control circuitry manages the noisey volumn blasts nicely without making things sound flat.

Music and speech are much better than before and there is one less wire to try to hide. We like this unit a lot but there is one drawback. Ours whistles for a few seconds until we back out of the garage and the radio finds the satallite.

In an entertainment on a shelf by itself, my H2A seriously overheast after about two hours of use. The signal usually is lost and I have to shut it down for 20-30 minutes to get the reception to work again.

The provided antenna has a 21 foot long cord. Check your desired location and what window/exit you want to mount the antenna on (the antenna has to face toward the Mason/Dixon Line or face "up" if you are in a state in the of the country near the Mason/Dixon Line). The short cord length can seriously limit where you put the system. A 50 foot extension cable is listed as an extra cost accessory but finding someone who both carries it and has it in stock is difficult.

The antenna provided with the kit works adequately indoors. Best reception however requires an external mount (especially in Missouri where the unit has to face "up"). The provided antenna is not very rugged so fails to work in rain, etc. There is a high gain antenna available as an extra cost accessory but again, the trick is finding someone to sell you one.

         "WORKS GREAT" 2009-12-10
        By H. A. Lange (MICHIGAN)
THE ANTENNA WORKS FANTASTIC. DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND IT. WHEN I INSTALLED IT, THE THREADED STUD THE COAX CABLE SCREWS ONTO WAS LOOSE. IN MY INFINITELY WISDOM, I DISMANTLED IT TO TIGHTEN IT. RECEPTION WAS POOR WHEN INSTALLED. BRIAN AT PIXEL SAID I BROKE IT. I RETURNED THE UNIT AND BRIAN SENT A NEW REPLACEMENT. THE STUD WAS STILL LOOSE BUT I DIDN'T MESS WITH IT. AS STATED ABOVE, WORKS GREAT.

         "It Works" 2009-04-16
        By P. Watase (Honolulu, HI)
It does work. Other AM/FM antennas like Terk and others do not work. My home is in a dead zone for both AM and FM. For some reason, cheap portable radios work and so does the car, but my expensive home stereo receivers only catch one FM and ZERO AM stations. I bought a Terk antenna...didn't work. AAUGH! I need my sports radio. Need to listen to Hawaii football! Go Warriors!

As a last resort, I bought this and it worked. I still don't get all the local radio stations, but now I get 6 FM stations and several AM stations...best of all I can now listen to sports radio on my home stereo.

"Excellent FM HD Radio Antenna" 2009-01-27
By Robert Gordon (Doylestown, Pa USA)
I recently purchased a Polk I-Sonic HD Radio. Because of my property, tons of trees, I was having trouble picking up a consistent HD signal. I tried at least four different indoor antennas with little to no improvement. I then went to the AM / FM / HD Radio Outdoor Antenna (Model AFHD-4). It was extremely easy to install and now I pick up all FM HD stations in my area, with a solid signal. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that it talks about also improving the AM band and that was not true in my case. However, that is not what I wanted it for, I strictly purchased it for the FM band and it works great!!
